Glenn Gaesser, professor of exercise physiology at Arizona State University in Phoenix, has been studying this topic for years. So he and colleague Siddharta Angadi dove into the databases and examined everything written about exercise, fitness, dieting, metabolic health and longevity. In total, they found more than 200 relevant studies.
They looked for an answer to the question of whether a heavy person becomes more vital by losing weight or by exercising. By comparing the results, it emerged that there were more benefits to being fitter than losing weight.
